Complete Guide: How to Get Student Visa in Australia

Dreaming to study in Australia? Yes, the dream of studying in Australia can come true with a student visa (Subclass 500) which is issued by the Dept. of Home Affairs. Anyone who wants to study in Australia can apply for a student visa.

A student visa is a type of temporary visa that allows the student to study in Australia and is valid for up to 5 years depending upon the duration of the course.

If a student wants to study full-time in Australia, he/she needs to apply for a student visa subclass 500. Anyone who is in Australia or offshore (living outside Australia) can apply for a student visa but needs to apply for a student visa at least 6 weeks before the course commences. With this visa, one can study in any renowned Australian educational institute. Here, we have mentioned all the information required for a student visa.

Australia Student Visa Requirement

Anyone who wants to study in Australia must have a student visa (subclass 500). To get a student visa, the applicant needs to submit the necessary documents to the Australian Department of Home Affairs to prove that the applicant is eligible to apply for the student visa. English Language Proficiency Requirements

If the applicant is from a non-English speaking country and wants to apply for a student visa, then he/she needs to pass an English language proficiency test. English language tests are IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT (Internet-Based Test), PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic and CAE (Cambridge Advanced English). 

Financial Requirement

For applying for student visa, the applicant needs to have sufficient funds and needs to show as a piece of evidence for sufficient funds to the Dept. of Home Affairs. This fund is used to cover the course fees, travel expenses, living costs while the student is in Australia. This fund is evidence that a student can live in Australia for 12 months and afford all the expenses.

GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) Requirement

A Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) is a form of statement written by the student visa applicant which shows that the student wants to stay and study in Australia temporarily. GTE helps Dept. of Home Affairs to identify whether students will be interested to stay in Australia after the visa expires or not.

In the GTE, visa applicants need to include their study experiences, current employment (if any), future employment opportunities (if received), ties to the home country (tie with family members, friends) and the economic situation in the home country. 

Health Requirements 

Before applying for a visa, students need to go through a medical check-up or radiological check-up with a doctor (the doctor must be approved by the Australian immigration department) to prove they have good health. The document received from the doctor needs to be submitted with the application.

Overseas Student Health Cover

All the students who are applying for a student visa must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OHSC) from a recognised insurance provider such as BUPA, NIB, AHM, Medibank, etc.

Character Requirements

For student study visa applications, students need to submit the documents to pass the character test. For the character test, the applicant needs to submit a police certificate, Form 80, character statutory declaration, military certificate, etc.

Age Requirements

One can apply for a study visa at any age but there are certain age limitations for students below 18 years old. For example, for admission in school, students must be the age of 6 and above, and so on.    

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

While applying for a student visa, one needs to submit the Confirmation of Enrolment, which could be received from the educational institution in which they are applying for study.

At the time of visa application, one needs to submit necessary documents to the Dept. of Home Affairs which would decide whether the visa would be granted or not. Here is the list of documents that could also be checked from the Australian Dept. of Home Affairs website:

  • Student Visa Application Form (157A)
  • Passport Copy and with Biodata Page
  • CoE Letter
  • Evidence of Funds
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • English Language Proficiency Score Card

  • Passport Size Photo

After collecting all the documents, one can fill out the online application form. The student visa application takes at least four to six weeks to process depending upon the conditions.
